Why is FCT testing required during PCBA manufacturing?

Functional testing (FCT) of a circuit board is one of the most important stages in the manufacturing process, which checks whether the PCBA is as designed.

While it is important to uphold the highest quality standards during PCB manufacturing, it is equally important to ensure that your boards perform as intended. This requires a series of tests at different stages of prototyping, manufacturing and assembly.

Why do we do functional testing?

3. To save the OEM time and effort, it may perform functional testing anywhere from 50% to 100% of the product delivered.

5. ICT and flying probe test can be strengthened by functional test to make the product more reliable and error-free.
6. By simulating the operating environment of the product, the FCT test can ensure the normal operation of the product. The DUT’s environment includes everything that can interact with it, such as the DUT’s power supply or any software loads required for the DUT to operate efficiently.
7. The PCB is tested through a series of signals and power supplies. At some point, the response is checked to verify that everything is working correctly. OEM test engineers typically create standards and test methods that are followed throughout the testing process. This test is most effective at identifying incorrect component values, functional issues, and parameter issues.
8. Test software makes it possible to automate functional testing, and test software is also called firmware by line operators. External programmable instruments, such as I/O boards or digital multimeters, are used to interface with the software. FCT testing can be performed using an instrument connected to the DUT via fixtures and software.
